The roles that data plays across the E&P business cycle are more varied than they are for most industries. This is partially due to the wide range of distinct categories of data that are involved but in addition is related to the fact that there are no universally agreed set of definitions for the names used. This chapter describes a set of roles that have proved effective in describing the "information lanscape" within a wide range of oil companies.
